Book of the Month is looking to hire an Editorial Assistant to help us select and promote the best new books to our members and media audience. If you are a smart, driven person looking to help readers discover new books they will love, this could be the job for you. This is a great next job for candidates with several years of experience at a book publisher, agency, or content company who want to gain experience in the consumer-facing aspects of the book business and are interested in technology-driven growth companies.
Job responsibilities include:
Track and obtain relevant upcoming manuscripts for BOTM consideration and assist in title selection
Organize and input contacts, sales numbers, and other data into spreadsheets and charts for review
Assist in content production, including sourcing contributors and drafting copy
Assist in book production, including proofreading jackets, tracking the status of files, and working closely with our production and operations teams
Organize, proofread, and upload content to our website
Coordinate with marketing, creative, and product teams to produce editorial assets
Support the editorial team in publisher and author relations, as well as other processes
2-3 years of experience in book publishing, editorial, or a related field.
Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. You excel at spotting typos, updating trackers, and have never met a folder you didn’t want to organize.
Avid reader. You have a deep knowledge of contemporary fiction, authors, and successful commercial literature (even within genres you personally find less compelling).
You are a fast reader who reads at least three books every week.
Well-developed book taste. You are as passionate about understanding which books our members will love as you are about your own taste in literature.
Strong communicator. You assert your opinions strongly and clearly.
Exceptional writer and proofreader. You will assist in the editing and drafting of editorial content, so strong writing and proofreading skills are key.
Career-minded. BOTM is a growth-oriented company; this position is fast-paced and we are seeking a candidate who is looking to learn and rise over time.
Analytical skills. An ability to do math and feel comfortable in spreadsheets is required.
Presentation skills. You are great with Powerpoint and similar programs
