VP, Finance and Accounting

We are seeking to hire a VP of Finance and Accounting to build and lead a high-performing finance organization at Book of the Month. This is a unique opportunity for a hands-on, financial professional to step up and act as a key leader at a rapidly growing subscription eCommerce business.

The VP of Finance will build the finance function from the ground up across Strategic Finance (FP&A) and Accounting with an opportunity to expand into Business Intelligence, Strategy, and Corporate Development over time. You will work closely with the CEO and COO who acquired and relaunched BOTM in 2016 and have led the growth of the business. The successful candidate will have a combination of deep financial expertise and proven experience as an execution-oriented general manager.   

About the Role

Strategic Finance (70%)

  • Create and maintain an accurate and detailed bottoms up monthly budget by instituting a well-defined budgeting process across the business.
  • Use the budget as a tool to ensure that each down-stream team across the company is prepared, appropriately staffed, and well supplied to achieve our company objectives. 
  • Deliver standard reporting that measures performance against the budget and provides helpful context and analysis.
  • Advise and lead functional leaders to improve performance and results across customer acquisition, inventory, product development, content, and more.
  • Lead ad-hoc analysis that deep dives into key challenges across the company.   
  • Own analysis, optimization, and oversight of our key subscription metrics including, cohort analysis, churn analysis, LTV, etc.

Accounting (30%)

  • Oversee an accounting function that delivers accurate and on-time monthly financial statements.
  • Manage and lead a successful and on-time annual audit.
  • Implement tools and processes that control risk and reduce the opportunity for wastage.


  • At least 8 years of experience in finance including a combination of the following:
    • 2-4 years in investment banking or private equity
    • 3-5 years in finance at a company scaling revenue in the range of  $50m to +$250.
    • 3-5 years in finance at a subscription consumer technology or technology enabled business. 
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, hire, lead and manage a high-performing team of finance professionals. 
  • Proven current/recent ability to personally build, create, edit and lead the development of bottoms-up financial models and analysis.
  • Strong fundamental accounting skills. CPA is a plus, but not a requirement.
  • Examples of using financial data and analysis to identify opportunities to meaningfully improve a business and then actively implementing changes to realize the benefits. 
  • Expert level understanding of, and hands-on experience with, financial technology tools across ERP systems, accounting systems, and business intelligence tools.
  • Bachelor’s degree from a challenging university in an analytical discipline. MBA from a top program is a plus.
