Director, Data and Analytics

At Book of the Month, we believe that data helps us make better decisions, build better products, and provide better service to our customers. As the lead of our Data and Analytics efforts, you will have two main objectives: (1) Build, maintain, and improve our internal analytics tools and systems, and (2) work closely across the organization to develop insights that power decision making using data from your platform. The data platform will be your product and the users of the data, throughout our organization, will be your customers. Over time, as you develop a strong understanding of our business, you will have the opportunity to lead a wide range of projects and/or functions that utilize analytical skills and data to make decisions.

You Will:

  • Design, build, improve, and maintain our data analytics platform, which is used for decision making across the business:
    • Extract data from a variety of different sources and load it into our AWS analytics database in an automated fashion.
    • Perform automated and manual ETL jobs to ensure data quality in the environment.
    • Write queries to build summarized cubes which can be accessed by business users through simple front-end tools, such as an Excel pivot table, Tableau, or Microstrategy.
  • Own analytic projects in diverse domains such as product development, marketing research, and web and mobile optimization to improve relevance, revenue, and user experience.
  • Use data to proactively monitor and improve every critical business process across our subscription ecommerce platform.  
  • Build excel models to develop projections based on past results.

About You:

  • B.S. in a technical or analytical discipline and 3-5+ years of experience in a Data or Analytics role.
  • Strong Technical Skills. Mastery of SQL and/or Excel. Some fluency in other programming languages, especially javascript, is a plus. Experience with Github, AWS, Netsuite, and JIRA is a plus.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. You are passionate about revealing hidden relationships and patterns. You’re excited to collaborate with teams across the company to plan and execute data-driven projects that help the company make better, smarter, and faster fact-based decisions.
  • You are interested in developing a deep understanding of eCommerce and subscription-oriented business models and data sets.
