Director of Operations

Book of the Month provides readers with a unique subscription ecommerce experience that helps them discover and buy new books they love each month. While simple and delightful from the member’s perspective, behind the scenes is a complex, at-scale subscription ecommerce operation. We are looking for a Director of Operations to provide leadership and management across all aspects of our operations. This is a highly-visible role with a wide span of influence that will include project management, warehouse & fulfillment operations, order management & ecommerce operations, inventory & print operations, and more. With nearly all of our operations controlled in-house, an action-oriented leader will have the opportunity to shape the organization and drive results first-hand. If you are looking to lead an ecommerce operation at a rapidly growing company -- there is no better role than this one.

About the Role

Cycle Operations

  • Own and execute the cycle checklist -- the core tool used to coordinate and execute all operations for each cycle.
  • Develop the monthly cycle forecast and ensure that all downstream functions are staffed and equipped to handle the monthly volume.

Operational Project Leadership

  • Identify and lead key projects that make improvements and/or additions to our member experience.
  • Work closely with the business applications product manager to build the software capabilities required to support and execute our projects/functions efficiently.
  • Example project/objectives include: (a) Eliminating 10-day shipping outcomes, (b) Expanding SKU count at secondary 3PLs, implementing automated box erector/packing machinery, and (c) Implementing trackable shipping methods for gift card shipments.

Fulfillment & Distribution Operations

  • Act as the primarily point of contact for our in-house and third party fulfillment centers.
  • Recommend and implement operational improvements that increase capacity, reduce errors, and decrease fulfillment costs at the warehouse.
  • Evaluate and operationalize opportunities to expand our warehouse network to reduce ship-to-delivery times.

Inventory & Printer Operations

  • Build tools (initially in excel) that identify books for reorder and initial order and accurately forecast the anticipated demand, and then execute timely POs to ensure that books are available when members order them.
  • Actively work with our printing partners to develop processes that reduce lead time and provide a “just-in-time” production capabilities.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years experience in an operations or project based leadership role at an ecommerce company or ecommerce function.
  • Expert level skills with various business productivity tools including excel and no-code/low-code automation tools. Including specific examples of implementing processes utilizing these tools.
  • Very hands-on management style. You own and do the work required of your team yourself, not just through the management of other team members.
  • Strong technical skills. You don’t need to know how to code, but you need to have a very strong understanding of how software tools are utilized, built, and integrated into operating environments.
  • A commitment to lifelong learning and an interest in building a successful career as an ecommerce operator.
  • Experience with LEAN, 5-whys, and other continuous improvement methodologies is a plus.
